Bermuda Black Film Weekend Joins Go To Bermuda’s Art Month Celebration

BTA Sponsors The BBFF

Bermuda is preparing to welcome a new chapter in its cultural story.

The inaugural Bermuda Black Film Weekend: Founders Edition is now officially featured on the Go To Bermuda tourism website as part of Bermuda’s Art Month events. Taking place from 15–18 October 2026, the four-day festival will bring Bermudian and international filmmakers, actors, industry executives and audiences together under the theme Connecting Voices Across the Diaspora.

This official tourism feature represents an important milestone for our inaugural festival. With the Bermuda Tourism Authority serving as an official sponsor, Bermuda Black Film Weekend is being recognised as more than a series of film screenings. It is a new cultural-tourism experience that invites residents and visitors to discover Bermuda’s history, identity, creativity and global connections through film.

Bermuda’s Stories on an International Screen

More than 20 films from over 15 countries and territories will be presented during the festival. Audiences will experience stories from Bermuda, the Caribbean, Africa, North America, Europe and across the wider Black diaspora.

The programme places Bermudian storytelling alongside international cinema, creating opportunities for visitors to experience the island in a different way. Through films created by Bermudians, audiences can explore elements of our history, culture and lived experiences—as if taking a cultural tour of Bermuda through the screen.

International guests may also discover stories connected to their own countries, communities and heritage, reinforcing the idea that Bermuda is a natural meeting point for Black Atlantic storytelling.

Four Days of Film, Culture, Education and Connection

The Founders Edition will feature:

  • The GIFTED Youth Film Summit, supporting girls and young people interested in film, technology, entertainment and design

  • The Black Carpet Opening Night Experience

  • Bermudian and international film screenings

  • World premieres and special presentations

  • Filmmaker conversations and industry panels

  • Networking with visiting filmmakers, actors and executives

  • The inaugural Bermuda Black Film Festival Awards

  • An interactive industry workshop focused on filmmaking, production, funding and distribution

Festival events will take place primarily at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, with additional programming at Ignite Bermuda.

Building a Cultural Legacy for Bermuda

The Bermuda Black Film Festival was created to celebrate the Black experience while welcoming filmmakers of all backgrounds whose work authentically explores Black lives, histories, identities and futures.

For Founder and Festival Director Dr. Dana Selassie, the vision extends far beyond one weekend. The goal is to establish Bermuda as a boutique international destination for Black cinema, cultural exchange, education and creative-industry development.

By bringing international industry professionals to the island, the festival also creates opportunities for Bermudian filmmakers and emerging creatives to develop practical skills, build meaningful relationships and explore pathways beyond Bermuda’s shores.

The support of the Bermuda Tourism Authority helps strengthen this vision and positions the festival as an authentic addition to Bermuda’s tourism and cultural calendar—one that we hope residents will be proud to host and visitors will return to experience annually.
